Well, when he won on the Alpe d'Huez we were there broadcasting his every step on the internet.

A team from Tensing and a team from the European Space Agency were standing at the finish line of this Tour de France race with a laptop. Both dedicated to test the revamped European GPS-system, Galileo.

Galileo is able to determine place to exactly two meters. The Tensing software is able to project these coordinates on a map in nearly real time. By combining the data of Galileo and Tensing the route of the most important cyclist could be followed, re-played and projected on the Internet.

A car following the cyclists was equipped with an onboard computer loaded with Tensing Track & Trace. The GPS positions received from Galileo were then communicated from the onboard computer to the Tensing Track & Trace Web application through GPRS. It was quite a job with enormous time pressure in an area with modest GPRS/GSM coverage. But it was also an unforgettable experience.
